Have you noticed that a new fitness trend has taken hold of Australia lately? It’s no longer cool to just lift weights at the gym and do your rounds on the treadmill: the country is in the craze of Ninja Warrior training, influenced by the popular eponymous TV program. In the show, which first aired in Japan before becoming huge in the US and then in Australia, pro athletes and fit members of the public are made to run through an extremely tough obstacle course. Those who get furthest quickest win.

The program’s great entertainment value and badass competitors have inspired a true workout trend. Gyms around the country are trying to integrate Ninja classes and build obstacle courses to satisfy the demand. It’s easy to see why Ninja Warrior training is so popular: running, rolling and jumping around through what is essentially a large playground looks a lot more fun than repetitive sets of bicep curls.

How Do Ninja Warrior Gyms Work?

Ninja Warrior workouts combine various skills from other sports disciplines. They have perhaps the most in common with parkour or free-running, a sport where participants use the outdoors as their personal obstacle course and run, roll, jump and tumble over everyday objects like walls, steps and lampposts. Ninja Warrior gyms take parkour to the next level, they build an extreme obstacle course that will require you to hang, pull up, swing, jump, roll, tumble, and much more.

Blending skills from climbing, martial art, strength training and even gymnastics makes Ninja Warrior training an extremely dynamic and versatile workout, that will challenge all your major muscle groups as well as your balance and flexibility. This variety means the workouts never become boring or repetitive. They also arm you with a whole host of useful skills for situations in daily life that may require quick reactions.

Another great attraction is the team element: Ninja Warrior workouts normally take place in group, with all the participants cheering each other on and helping each other out with tips and techniques. And although it may look like you need to be super-jacked to participate, it’s actually a sport that’s open to anyone: many kids love it, and it’s a popular choice for birthday parties. And while you will learn some techniques like landing and falling, the main point is to have fun, which is something anyone can do.
